29 years later, Alexander McQueen is bringing back this sexy pants trend

By Alexandre Marain

You may not have been aware of it, but Alexander McQueen was instrumental in the success of low-rise pans in the late 1990s-2000. To understand this, you only need to step back in time to see his very first collection, which was presented in 1993 at the Ritz. This was the first time that the British designer demonstrated the magnitude of his talents. His creativity took a sharp upwards turn when he unveiled his risqué pants, which were inspired by the "builder's bum." It alluded to a style of pants worn in a very low-slung manner, revealing the edges of the wearer's derrière. The bumster trend was born.

It is no secret that the trends that marked the 2000s are back and more fashionable than ever. The list includes notable items like velour tracksuits, sequined dresses, XXL belts, Trucker caps and last, but not least, (very) low-waisted pants! So many labels, including Versace, Coperni and the classic Y2K label, Blumarine, are putting their own spin on the trend in their own collections. Male no mistake, the whole idea of the bumster (as per McQueen) means actually revealing some of your buttocks, rather than just hinting at it.

Celebrities like Julia Fox, Bella Hadid, and Emily Ratajkowski have already indulged in this very sexy revival. The latter was spotted pairing the ultra-low waist pants with a visible thong. This was all well before the bumster 2.0 trend presented by Alexander McQueen during the last Spring-Summer 2023 show, helmed by Sarah Burton. On the catwalk, several silhouettes hit the pavement in chic suit pants, and jeans, with both worn low-slung. Will this trend be as popular as it was 29 years ago? Watch this space.
