The tweed jacket, beloved by many French women, is making its annual fall comeback

By Alexandre Marain

Every fall brings its own favorite jacket trend. This fall, the one we'll see everywhere is none other than the tweed jacket. Tracing its origins back to hunting jackets and later made fashionable and famous by Coco Chanel in the 1950s, this fabric is now a wardrobe staple.

This Fall/Winter 2023-2024 the leading coat trend is actually a timeless classic. Here's why black tailored coats are having such a moment this year.

While this silhouette, with its contrasting hems and looped fabric, is often associated with the upper class, it's increasingly finding its way into the wardrobes of fashionable girls and the younger generation, as it can add just the right amount of chic to any outfit, whether worn with jeans and a T-shirt, or a little black dress. Some go even further and wear this jacket trend with a tracksuit, giving it a more effortless vibe.

Since it can elevate an entire look in the blink of an eye, several fashion houses have revisited the trend this season. Chanel, of course, made it the leitmotif of its Fall/Winter 2023-2024 collection, Miu Miu mixed it with sportswear and casual inflections, Moschino infused it with grunge influences, and Coperni offered a skin-tight suit jacket.

And since the stars have a tendency to stay one step ahead, they took advantage of the summer season to make it their own. During the promotional tour of her film Barbie, Margot Robbie was spotted in Seoul on July 2 wearing a pale pink Moschino ensemble consisting of a cotton and tweed jacket adorned with heart-shaped buttons and a matching skirt from its Spring/Summer 2022 collection. Rita Ora, meanwhile, opted for a short jacket in white tweed with gold detailing last May. Finally, Elsa Hosk, proved her mastery of the quiet luxury trend in the streets of Paris with a cream-colored tweed jacket by Marcéla London. We are willing to bet that the tweed jacket – arguably the Frenchwoman's favorite jacket – will continue to be the most sought-after style once again this season.
