Dovetail Debuts First Flame Resistant Pants

Women’s workwear brand Dovetail Workwear introduced its first flame-resistant (FR) pants. The bottoms, available in canvas and denim constructions, are designed for use among welders, blacksmiths, glassblowers and utility workers within oil, gas, electrical, utility, and heavy industries where the need for electrical arc and flash-flame protection is essential.

The Britt Utility FR Canvas, made with a midweight stretch material, and the Britt Utility FR Denim, made with 10 oz. comfort stretch denim, both offer durability without added weight and are treated with flame- and arc-resistant properties, the brand stated. The heavyweight DX Bootcut is made with 11 oz. FR denim and offers a slim bootcut leg and a mid-rise waist.

All Dovetail FR pants meet safety standards PPE CAT 2, ASTM F106, and NFPA 2112 and 70E, and complies with use across a variety of industrial jobs and DIY projects requiring flash protection. Each pant style offers permanent protection for the life of the garment when consumers follow the manufacturer’s recommended laundering instructions.

“Never has Dovetail’s mission of bringing more and better options for women been more critical than in FR apparel, as the range and quality of men’s and women’s options remains disparate,” said Sara DeLuca, Dovetail Workwear co-founder and head of product development. “Because FR is a requirement in many occupations, women have adapted by resigning themselves to men’s pants or wearing women’s options that are less than ideal.”

The gap in the market became apparent at a recent National Association of Women in Construction conference where DeLuca said she met with several female engineers who said their FR apparel options were “stiff, thick and ill-fitting.”

The new collection, she added, is designed to “flip the script” and give women options that fit and move well.

In addition to their FR properties, Dovetail describes its FR pants as a “walking toolbox” with 11 pockets for safety glasses and tools, articulated knees for mobility and tough cuffs for added abrasion resistance. Features like the brand’s crotch gussets and EZWaist, which expands for comfort, provides increased range of movement.

DeLuca said the collection offers women “pants that will work for them, not against them.”

The Dovetail FR pants retail for $149 and are offered in four inseam lengths in up to size 18 in select styles. They’re available now at the brand’s website.

The FR line is the latest addition to Dovetail’s permanent collection. The label launched hemp denim fabrications earlier this year, describing the jeans as “lightweight, but super strong” for working women. It stepped into the ranch apparel category as well with the DX Ranch Collection, a bootcut pant offered in two Cordura denim and canvas fabrications.
